ABOUT

I am a researcher, educator, engineer, and designer.

I'm Soo Hyeon (Soo Hyeon is my first name with space in between - please note that Hyeon is not my middle or my last name) Kim. You can also call me Sue. I am an assistant professor in the School of Information at Florida State University (FSU).

My scholarly goal is to broaden and support children’s engineering learning opportunities by transforming rural libraries and family interactions as facilitators for tech-supported maker experiences. I employ qualitative research methods to investigate learning processes in authentic contexts and examine factors within rural libraries and home environments that influence making and learning.

Previously, I was an associate professor (with tenure) of Library and Information Science at Luddy School of Informatics, Computing, and Engineering at Indiana University Indianapolis. In addition, I worked as a project manager to develop smartphones at LG Electronics. I received my Ph.D. from Learning, Design, and Technology program at the Pennsylvania State University. My educational background also includes B.S. in Industrial Design from KAIST (Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology) and M.S. in Strategic Product Design, Industrial Design Engineering from TU Delft (Delft University of Technology).
